Helping Kids Take Charge of Their Health: Dr. Sachin Sakharkar’s Guide to Developing Healthy Habits

  • by

Finding ways to keep children fascinated all day long is no picnic. Children are full of energy and enjoy playing, so they may not follow strict fitness routines. It’s important that they have fun while staying active, as this is the key to helping them remain energetic all day as this is the secret to maintaining their energy level all day round. But then, one has to stress the need to be active, because to their physical health, it contributes even more to their emotional and cognitive growth.

To maintain a healthy and engaging routine for children:

Promote Engaging Activities: Children are full of energy and tend to enjoy activities that resemble games instead of structured exercise programs. Instead, organise fun-filled activities and encourage them to play traditional games like tug of war, a classic game that’s perfect for team-building and physical strength. All you need is a strong rope and two teams. The objective is to pull the other team across a line, engaging core muscles and teamwork.  Relay Races (with a Twist) Set up a series of relay race stations that involve different activities. For example, run to the first station, do five push-ups, run to the second station, do ten sit-ups, then sprint to the finish. You can make each station unique to keep kids engaged.

Take time to Ask: Find out what activities your kid enjoys doing. Kids may like taking classes in dancing, while others may choose to play sports such as basketball or cricket. When children are given the freedom to choose their own activities, they are more likely to stay involved.

Children thrive in a supportive environment:  which can be fostered through family participation. Adults who maintain consistent exercise routines serve as role models for younger generations. Plan family-friendly activities such as hiking, riding, or camping to make physical activity a shared experience. Include your siblings and extended family in the excitement. You may also include relaxing, non-physical activities such as board games or storytelling to keep the entire family engaged.

Facilitating healthy habits is of utmost importance: As far as a kitchen and eating areas are concerned, the nutritious food should be placed conspicuously such as on the kitchen counter top or at the upper side of the refrigerator. This way, children do not look for healthy snacks, they simply take the ones placed where they are able to reach them.

Nurture their motivation: Encouraging children to focus on small, age-appropriate and attainable objectives based on physical activity can improve the self-image and self-resiliency of the children concerned. According to developmental paediatricians, goal-setting offers children a feeling of purpose and helps them develop a growth mentality. Encourage your child to set reasonable goals, such as learning to ride a bike, going on a short walk, or running a specific distance. Celebrate these accomplishments to boost their confidence and sense of success.

Limit Screen Time: Although screens nowadays are considered one of the main sources of entertainment for young kids, it is crucial for parents to be screen time regulators. Rather motivate doing things that require going outdoors, reading, or making something which helps kids develop mentally as well as be aware of where they stand.

Incorporating these strategies ensures that children not only remain physically active and fit but also develop their emotional strength. That can be achieved through social interactions, family ties, and mental activities. The important thing is to ensure that these exercises are fun and pleasurable to the extent that the children will embrace concepts of health for the rest of their lives such as achieving personal best, meeting new people, or bonding with other family members.

While it might sound difficult to allow children to take over their health, such decisions are strategic short-term investments in the promise of their long-term future. By providing them with information, bringing them to the table, and giving them equipment to make proper choices, you are preparing them for a healthy future. Such children will not only be physically healthier, and they will also gain self-worth, determination, and independence, all of which will be applicable to every aspect of their lives.
