“Listen Up: La Compagnie Dramatique Revives the Art of Storytelling with Purpose”

  • by

Faraz Khan’s journey into storytelling began through an early fascination with theology and myth. Growing up between Saudi Arabia and Hyderabad, he was captivated by how religious stories shaped entire cultures and bound people through shared narratives. This initial exposure to mythmaking sparked a lifelong passion for exploring the ways humans create meaning. Years later, it would lead him to London, where he immersed himself in the vibrant world of Theatre, studying Classical Text and Method Acting at institutions like the Drama Centre and LAMDA. It was there, in the unfiltered and raw atmosphere of London’s live performance scene that Faraz found the kind of artistic expression he wanted to bring back to India.

His creative journey is now a shared one with his partner, Ragini Roychowdhury. An accomplished filmmaker in the Advertising world, Ragini began directing her own films after years of working with some of the industry’s top directors. Her background as an Associate Director taught her how to navigate the often delicate balance between artistic vision and the logistical demands of time and budget – an essential skill she now brings to Theatre. Together, Ragini and Faraz are launching La Compagnie Dramatique, a theatre company with a vision to make storytelling immediate, immersive and resonant for modern audiences in India.

LCD’s mission is as ambitious as it is thoughtful. The company plans to stage one to two plays each year, carefully choosing works that challenge and inspire audiences with their contemporary relevance. But LCD is equally invested in the development process itself. Regular play readings will invite artists from diverse backgrounds to participate in the creative exchange, unearthing timely stories and ideas. From these sessions, the most compelling works will go from page to stage, creating a lineup of productions that speak to the present moment with depth and insight.

Beyond the traditional theatre space, LCD is also tapping into digital platforms to expand its reach. The company plans to produce podcasts on Theatre and Storytelling, with the goal of keeping these traditions alive in an age of constant screen consumption. Faraz and Ragini believe that while audiences consume more media on their devices, they still yearn for genuine, face-to-face experiences. By leveraging digital channels, LCD aims to draw people out of their homes and into the theatre, offering them the one-of-a-kind impact that only live storytelling can provide.

In a culture dominated by visual media, where we’re encouraged to “see” rather than “listen,” LCD is taking a different approach. Most visual content separates the viewer from what’s being observed, creating distance. In contrast, listening has the power to envelop and unify. LCD’s social media content will celebrate the spoken word, fostering an audience that doesn’t just “watch” our shows but actively “listens.” Faraz and Ragini hope that by cultivating this active listening, LCD can nurture a community that values empathy, sensitivity and genuine human connection – qualities that feel especially crucial in today’s fragmented world.
