Producer Devendra Malviya and actor Samar Jaisingh arrived in the National Capital recently to promote their upcoming film, 2020 Delhi, which has already stirred significant controversy ahead of its release. The film, which has drawn attention for its portrayal of the 2020 Delhi riots, is facing a legal hurdle as Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the Delhi riots case, has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking to halt its release.
During a press conference at Plaza PVR in New Delhi, Malviya responded to the legal challenge. “I don’t understand why Sharjeel Imam and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are upset without having seen the film. We haven’t received any information from the court yet, but we respect the law and will ensure that the film is released as per schedule, within the legal framework,” Malviya stated.
Actor Samar Jaisingh, who stars in the film, shared his experience of working in 2020 Delhi. The film is notable for being the country’s first single-shot movie, a technique that presented unique challenges for the cast and crew. “In a single-shot film, there are no retakes, which means every actor had to perform flawlessly in one go,” Jaisingh explained. He expressed surprise at the criticism the film has faced, particularly after only a 3-minute trailer was released on January 24. “Despite not having seen the full film, prominent figures like Manu Singhvi have called it a threat to national unity. It’s disheartening that instead of acknowledging the hard work that went into creating this film, such individuals are trying to demoralize the team,” he added.
Producer Malviya also discussed the rigorous four-year journey of making the film, which was produced without external financial support. He emphasized the importance of portraying the tragic events of the 2020 Delhi riots, where 53 lives were lost, particularly in the context of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to India during the unrest. “The effort to stop this film is disturbing,” Malviya said. “We have worked tirelessly to showcase the truth, including the suffering of Hindu minorities in neighboring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh.”
The film, which features a mix of both young and experienced actors such as Brijendra Kala, Siddharth Bhardwaj, Bhupesh Singh, Chetan Sharma, and Akash Arora, is set to be released soon. It promises to present a poignant depiction of the consequences of the 2020 Delhi riots, as well as the challenges faced by displaced Hindus.
With the legal battle ongoing and the team confident in their work, 2020 Delhi remains a highly anticipated and controversial release, which is expected to spark intense debates upon its arrival on the big screen.
