Noida’s new fitness rule: Female trainers must at gyms, pools, yoga centres

  • by

In a bold move for women’s safety and empowerment, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has rolled out a new rule: All gyms, swimming pools, and yoga centers in the district must hire female trainers.

This directive comes after a recommendation by the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission. The order was issued by the district’s sports department, which also emphasized stringent action against unauthorised gyms and swimming pools operating illegally in the area.

The order also makes it compulsory for gyms and other concerned establishments to have their trainers carry Aadhaar cards to ensure identification and install CCTVs and digital video recorders for surveillance.

The move is part of a broader effort to provide women with more job opportunities and create safer, more welcoming spaces for them. The sports department’s new order is clear – female trainers will be required at all fitness centres, and non-compliant businesses will face strict action.

Anita Nagar, the sports officer for Gautam Buddh Nagar, said, “The decision applies to all hotels, schools, societies, and other establishments with gyms, swimming pools, and yoga centres. The administration has been taking steps in this direction for some time, but with the formal approval from the Women’s Commission, these measures are now being actively implemented. Female trainers will work alongside the existing male trainers at these centres.”

Nagar further mentioned that the move follows numerous complaints received last year, highlighting safety concerns for women. In response, the sports department issued directives to ensure that female trainers are hired, not only providing employment opportunities but also creating a safer and more secure environment for women.

In November 2024, the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission released a set of guidelines and proposals aimed at enhancing women’s safety in public spaces and making these spaces more accessible to them. Amongst the proposals were measures to prevent men from taking measurements of women in boutiques or tailor shops, cutting women’s hair without their consent, and training women in gyms without proper female trainers.

In addition to the mandate for female trainers, the department is also taking action against illegal gyms, swimming pools, and yoga centres. Last year, the administration took action against 198 such unauthorised centres in the district, and the crackdown on illegal operations will continue.
